Tholos in Rhodes: great architecture

Rhodes , as every holiday destination, is a mixture of different places. There are resorts pumping with life till the sunrise, where parties never end. True lands of wonders for young people seeking place to wind down after. There are also places that seem to reverberate the tones of years that long ago faded in the darkness of the past. Those cosy little towns, with winding streets, typically Greek architecture and people that are so warm-hearted and open, always eager to help or tell one of those stories that describe nearly each detail of the island. Myths are deeply rooted in the culture of the island, and even more in local peoples’ minds.
Tholos, located in the north west part of the island is a resort that managed to successfully maintain its character.
It is a unique combination of a colorful traditional village and a not busy resort. A sprinkling of shops, tavernas, bars and restaurants can be found around the hotels and apartments. Its excellent beach can be breezy – an ideal place for windsurfers. The traditional way of life is still widely practiced in the village itself, and you should expect a very warm welcome from the friendly people living there.
You should not miss to visit the picturesque church of Agios Spiridonas, with it’s lovely white bell tower. The old centre of Tholos is built in traditional Rhodian style. With tall shuttered buildings and narrow streets, Tholos (Theologos) village in Rhodes is a delight to wander through.
Another place that may interest many tourists is Afandou: a village located along the longest beach in Rhodes, with the clearest waters of the Aegean Sea and also ones that are the most peaceful. There are plenty of forms of accommodation to choose from: so each and every tourist will find something for himself.

Dusty Rhodes- how to bear the heat

There are innumerable things that do attract tourists and encourage them to come and see this beautiful Greek island. Rhodos offers a neverending list of fascinating attractions. Its mild climate guarantees a profound, deep breath to have a rest for all that are exhausted with their daily routine.

Goldes sun that is reflected by the waves’ crests paints the islands’ countrysides with whole abundance of different coulours. Early hours of the day are best characterised by the word : vivid and clear. All details are highlighted by bright early sun that rises up over the horizon. Shadows are long, the air is fresh, the chill of the night is soon fought away by warm sunshine. in the middle of the day when the sun is up high in the sky its rays begin to tire: during summer months scorching heat sucks up all the moisture from every chink and crevice of the land. All surfaces become dry and dusty. no sightseeing is possible. That particular part of the day is spent by locals on invigorating themselves: they doze off or simply find their hide-out in the friendly chill of their houses. When long awaited dusk comes near everybody feela a deep relief.  When the last rays of sunshine disappear behind the horizon night life bursts out. Night clubs and restaurants are usually overcrowded. And it is food that I would like to focus on now. Engaging in discovering the tastes of the island is crucial when it comes down to unravelling the riddles of certain culture. For each and every traveler that takes his hobby seriously laying the secrets of land’s cusine bare is crucial. Only then one gets a true insight into culture. Many famous chefs, together with Gary Rhodes , a famous British one, claim that cusine of Rhodes is an inimitable blend of Greek imagination and European or Middle Eastern taste.

Hotels- headquarters of masses of tourists

Rhodes suffers from annual onslaughts of tourists every summer. Hotels barely manage to host them all, as it seems that each and every Englishman, as well as each and every European man goes for holidays in ,more or less, the same time. What do they seek there? Why is this island so popular among tourists?

The Colossus of Rhodes < one of the seven wonders of the ancient world>, the remains of temple of Apollo or ancient amphitheatre are only few monuments that are most often visited by tourists. The spirit of ages that long ago faded does still remain in Greece. The idea to spend holidays sunbathing in Rhodes is, presumably, the most popular but there are people who do appreciate the island for totally different reasons :)

The capital, also called Rhodes, is a beautifully located city< where the waters of The Mediterranean Sea and The Aegean Sea meet> that charms with its unique atmosphere, climate and architecture. One of its most famous buildings is the headquarters of The Knights Hospitallers, who possesed the island < 14th-16th century>.  Outstanding mediaeval castle is surrounded by enormous walls as well as 4 km long deep moat.

In 1522 Rhodes was conquered by Turks and remained under their rule till 19th century. Those ages also left their mark on the capital’s architecture. Suleymaniye Mosque, turkish mediaeval baths or Ottoman library with priceless islamic manuscripts. Those turbulent times that Rhodes went through create the base of inimitable blend of styles, cultures, religions. Most valuable remains of ancient history can be seen in archeological museum. Two sculptures of Aphrodite probably interest tourits the most.

And when undercovering the secrets of history becomes mundane Rhodos has beautiful beaches and luxurious hotels to offer, as well as innumerable cafes, restaurants or night clubs to hang out. Holidays there can hardly be dull.
