Trianda: present and ancient times

Trianda, known also as Ialyssos, is probably the most commonly visited place in Rhodes because of its historical value. There are so many monuments to see around! The name “Ialyssos” was commonly used in the past, in ancient times. That village was located in the vicinity of present Trianda. Most famous remain of that palce is  the Filerimos  Hill, where are located:

  • ruins of a temple devoted to Athene Polias, built in III century BC
  • doric fontaine, a spring  that provided the town with fresh water
  • Byzantine monastery Filerimos build where before ages was located an ancient town of Ialyssos. Nowadays it is a very popular place for romantic strolls. Also, a place that is very commonly chosen by fiancees to get married. From the top of the hill there is an outstanding view of the whole area.

In the vicinity of the town there is a beautiful valley called the Valley of Butterflies, during summer it is invaded with myriads of those colourful insects. Choosing to visit this part of Rhodes is definitely like hitting the jackpot.

When Rhodes becomes boring it is obvious that there is a possibility to change location. I would recommend Kos, an island located not far away, in the same Archipelago < Dodekanese>. It is also a place where the past faces the present. There are ruins of ancient amphitheatres to see. Lots of orthodox churches to visit. And it is only a stone’s throw from Rhodes, so one can easily get back.
