Rhodes- a bit off the beaten track of thought

Such small an island as Rhodos does not necesarily boast educational infrastrucre that could cover its population’s actual demand.  The only university there is University of Aegean, that participates in the programme Socrates-Erasmus ( of international exchange of students). The authorities of the island though once took the demand of students into further consideration and established a scholarship programme.

This is what I thought when I saw somewher in the web ‘ rhodes scholarship’. i did not associate it with for example Bill Clinton…

There are about ninety different scholarships to choose from : each adjusted to particular needs of particular students. Once in a year all participants of the educational programmes are listed, checked, compared with each other and the most brilliant one is chosen from the group. The winner is given a unique chance to complete one to two years of his college course in Oxford, England. But the scholarship is of Anglo- saxon origin, not Greek. The student applying for the scholarship must boast:

  • literary and scholastic attainments;
  • energy to use one’s talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports;
  • truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship;
  • moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings.

Not much to mix with the randy climate of Rhodes holidays. Randy restaurants, randy beaches. I had better remember this mantra:)
