Rhodes town - a bit of history

Rhodes island has very hot and dry climate, very characteristic for the Aegean Sea region. Summer lasts six months and is warm, sunny and often with no rain that can contribute to seasonal droughts. Violent but short torrential rains sometimes happen at the end of the summer and they are followed by stabilised warm weather that can last even till the end of the year.Any tourist planning to visit the island has to bear in mind that summer in the Aegean is much warmer than the one he got used to in his motherland. Choosing peak of the summer season for the first visit is highy inadvisable due to the possible thermal shock. Unless one is used to temperatures oscillating between 30 and 40 degrees of Celsius.

The town of Rhodes is divided inot two parts. One is the old town and one the modern part that spreads in three different directions. The modern part was built during Turkish occupation when Greeks were not allowed to dwell in the old part of the town and so they founded a fe new villages that now consist the modern town. Commercialisation is clearly visible everywhere: those few buildings in the town centre that are not hotels are either souvenir shops either travel agencies or cafes.

The town is surrounded by neverending rows of sunloungers, sunshades and showers cramming each and every square meter of the beach, especially its eastern part called Elli.
