Rhodes, situated on the crossroads of many civilisations, is decidedly a place perfect for holidays. Both for those who just want to lie on the beach and people who like to explore the place they are spending holidays. A real mixture of cultures is clearly visible in each and every corner of this divine island.

Kings’ cruise in Dodekanese archipelago

Holidays for kings. Soft breeze on your cheeks, aquamarine waters all around and a luxurious yacht all for you. In Faliraki or Mykonos you can easily find a yacht to hire and then only taste each day spent  on a delightful cruise around Rhodes, and also visit some islands in the Dodekanese, A divine island of an unrivalled beauty.

The island is composed primarily of granite. It has little natural fresh water and relies on the desalination of sea water in order to meet its needs. There are 9,320 inhabitants (2001) most of whom live in the largest town, Mykonos, also known as Chora which lies on the west coast.

Today, Mykonos is one of the most cosmopolitan islands in Greece having become increasingly popular with mass tourism. It is known for its diverse and intense nightlife featured by a vast number of bars and nightclubs. Mykonos is also known for its sandy beaches.

Faliraki on the other hand, is a tiny village often visited by tourists that come to see Rhodes. It is located on the very water’s edge, constantly bathed in sunlight. The beach there is golden and  sandy, offers a great opportunity to rest, set your mind of sunbathing and not on working. And at night Faliraki offers an array of places to go and paint the town red.

Greek patriarchal society

… to be contined :P

What does the word “Rhodes” refer to;> i found on the internet that there is even a fashion house named “Rhodes & Beckett”. That is an Australian trademark, the company produces clothes made of finest Egyptian cotton.

Yet Rhodes & Beckett cannot be the topic of a post on a blog devoted to Rhodes, an island located in Greece.

Waterpark in Rhodes has also been accuratley described in this blog… Huh, so what can be the idea for the next post? I though about writing something about the society of Rhodes.

As this tiny island is a part of Greece it is not hard to guess what kind of lifestyle people living here are most likely to lead. Patriarchal seems to be just the most suitable word. Family is the foundation of Greek culture. Strong tights, relations that demand sacrifices. We know it well from many films that present Greek reality. It may seem strange to many foreigners how strong the power of the head of the family may be. How huge impact may he < as it is a man most of the times> wiled on the members of his family. This society is therefore a really tightly knit group of people, all of them seem to obey similar rules and regulations, family is the most important and precious thing in life. And that attitude, to some  degree, could be adopted by some western societies…

Waterside: a wide choice of nighlife entertainment

Rhodes is an island that falls asleep really rarely, one can say, nearly never. As it is one of the main holiday destinations among Europeans. And it boasts beautiful sandy beaches, inimitable historical monuments and aquamarine waters of Aegeyan Sea.

Nightlife in Rhodes in undeniably one of the most varied and intense. There are so many places to go and party till the first rays of the rising sun light up the horizon that one can easily get confused where to go. Fortunately there is something for everyone.

Waterside is lined up with different nightclubs, pubs and other places of entertainment. Waterside is therefore not only a stretch of beachThere you can either go and dance all night long, or rather have something to eat and drink, talk with your friends and meet other people. One of the most special places is a Greek tavernas where you can touch the real spirit of Rhodes, listen to typical Greek music. When on holidays in Rhodes that option just needs to be chosen at least once, so that when you come back home you will be able to admit that you have pushed yourself to getting to know the culture better. That you did not waste your time queuing in a Rhodes shopping centre full of tourists tired of all-night parties.

Rhodes across China

After having known the programme by Gary Rhodes “Rhodes across India” it is no surprise to me to discover that he also delves into Chinese culture and cuisine in his programme”Rhodes across China” emited on UKTV Food.

As in the programme about Indian cuisine it is essential for Gary to touch the real China.

The Chinese journey commences in Beijing where travellers can take the iconic sights of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Next up is the chance to get within touching distance from the Great Wall, then feast on traditional Peking Duck as the sun goes down.
A ‘Terracotta Warrior’ day trip is sure to impress history buffs. For those looking for more zen there is the chance to join the locals in the ancient art of Tai Chi. The trip then travels onto Suzhou to explore the area on bike, with a relaxing evening of traditional opera and theatre amongst the trees and waterfalls.
After a relaxing time in the Chinese countryside travellers hit Shanghai and absorb the art exhibits whilst hitting the shops in Yuyuan Bazaar.
After exploring Southern China, travellers can head to Yangshuo for a five-day cookery school – learn about traditional Chinese cuisine, and then visit local food markets, gaining skills which are sure to impress friends when back in the UK.

As for the accommodation in China one has to think it over carefully. Best option is to seek accommodation through the Internet firstly, and then make few callas and sent e-mails. Most safe seems to be the option of hiring an apartment.

Cyprus Rhodes University does not exist?

Where is Rhodes? Everybody should know the answer for this question as I have already written about it few times in this blog. This tiny island has much to offer for tourists yet , unfortunately, not much for young people living there that want to pursue career in higher education. As the fictitious Cyprus Rhodes University does not truly exist (it is only an element of a new show GREEK, and there is no relation to anything else that this show if you try to seek in the Internet). So what lies in store for young and promising writers, scientists or other budding future successful people? Fortunately there are universities in Greece, so they just have to change location and try to accommodate themselves in one of the biggest Greek cities. There are plenty of higher education centres to choose from, offering technical as well as agricultural courses as well as ones covering humanities. There is also Aegeyan University (one of its departments is located in Rhodes, still it is not much to choose from, is it?).

There are also few places to study in foreing languages, like in The University of Indianapolis in Athens in in European University in Athens. Young Greeks now have plenty of opportunities to choose from, and as Greece is in The European Union  they may as well study in other European countries.

Rhodes across India: what does it mean?

Rhodes , apart from being the undeniable jewel of Dodekanese archipelagois simply a word. A set of letters, that sound in a particular way. And that word does not only mean the Greek island. For example<those who are interested in cooking will be well-informed> there is a man, called Gary Rhodes, a cook that is extremely popular in Great Britain. He is a talented cook as well as very imaginative, His adventure with cooking began when he was 14 and because his mother went back to work at that time he was made to be able to cook for himself. He graduated from a college in Kent, then worked in Amsterdam Hilton, there he was badly hit by a tram and had to undergo a serious brian surgery. That particular event in his life made him very determined to succeed in his chosen field, or vocation rater: he wanted to become a renown cook.

And so, now in British television he has got his own show, called “Rhodes across India”. He was sent to India by his boss to learn Indian cooking techniques and to show them later on the air. ” Rhodes across India” is a great programme in which you can learn many interesting things about Indian cuisine as well as see outstanding photographs of that beautiful land. Photographs taken by Gary or by others, they make a perfect background for Indian cuisine, just regret it that television is not able to transfer smells!

Weather in Rhodes: what to do when it gets bad?

Visiting Rhodes is a truly grat way of spending holidays. Yet even there weather may become not necessarily that kind we would like most it to be. Believe it or not, it rains in Rhodes! from time to time, once in a blue moon, yet rains occur, otherwise that stunning green island would not be anything more that a gathering of dry plants and rocks hot because of the dazzling and warm sunshine.

So, when there comes rain, and you seem to be stuck in your hotel, studio or apartment or anything else you should try to find a solution and go out, not stay inside till your holidays come to an end. Maybe sightseeing while it is cold, winy and wet is not the most pleasurable thing to do yet for example, being in Rhodes and not visitng a cinema there would ba great sin ;P Cinemas in Rhodes usually offer the repertoire of every European city. Yet there are also places that offer watching films about Rhodes, and it that way help getting to know the island when it is raining or, overall, when the weather makes it impossible to fully appreciate the stay in Rhodes.

The collosus of Rhodes, ruins of castles of the Knights hospitallers and many more can be seen in a cinema :)

Trianda: present and ancient times

Trianda, known also as Ialyssos, is probably the most commonly visited place in Rhodes because of its historical value. There are so many monuments to see around! The name “Ialyssos” was commonly used in the past, in ancient times. That village was located in the vicinity of present Trianda. Most famous remain of that palce is  the Filerimos  Hill, where are located:

  • ruins of a temple devoted to Athene Polias, built in III century BC
  • doric fontaine, a spring  that provided the town with fresh water
  • Byzantine monastery Filerimos build where before ages was located an ancient town of Ialyssos. Nowadays it is a very popular place for romantic strolls. Also, a place that is very commonly chosen by fiancees to get married. From the top of the hill there is an outstanding view of the whole area.

In the vicinity of the town there is a beautiful valley called the Valley of Butterflies, during summer it is invaded with myriads of those colourful insects. Choosing to visit this part of Rhodes is definitely like hitting the jackpot.

When Rhodes becomes boring it is obvious that there is a possibility to change location. I would recommend Kos, an island located not far away, in the same Archipelago < Dodekanese>. It is also a place where the past faces the present. There are ruins of ancient amphitheatres to see. Lots of orthodox churches to visit. And it is only a stone’s throw from Rhodes, so one can easily get back.

Stegna in Rhodes

Choosing between Crete and Rhodes may really be a hard task to complete as both of the islands located in the Mediterranean are equally worth visiting, equally interesting from the historical as well the tourist point of view. Crete is bigger yet that does not necessarily mean that there is less to visit while staying in Rhodes. Rhodes has a real array of different tourist resorts to choose from, yet there are probably really few such places that have something to offer for everyone.

Stegna located on the east coast of the island is a tiny village that has to offer both peace and quiet as well as entertainment for those that crave for stronger feelings and attractions

The beach is located just 500 meters along the road from Stegna, and is the ideal bathing place for the local villagers. These make up most of the bathers on the beach, along with the visitors staying at the hotel. An ideal location for those seeking relaxation. Sand and pebbles, a kiosk, water sports, a few tavernas and rooms for rent.

Flocks of robins do sometimes appear on the horizon : they comprise specific climate of the place. Robins are small auburn birds, met all over Europe. In Rhodes as well.

Stegna has truly outstanding beach, with sand that has no match all around that island,
